Satie, Satiety and Satire

Why?

Why do people not appreciate art?

Why are people seemingly afraid to be challenged by theatre?

Why are people afraid to reflect on different perspectives they are presented with?

Why are artists who present differing perspectives of society not models to be upheld?

Why are there people willing to live through poverty to present Canadian theatre?

Why are there pennyless artists that indebt themselves to see theatre realized?

Why is it that they are right to do so, but nobody seems to recognize it or want to encourage it?

...

Why am I afraid to show the same dedication to music as these people do to theatre?

  • I think it might have something to do with the fact that you like a roof over your head and having food to eat.

  • Boo hoo, poor whining artist.

Now, back to writing my novel.

I believe they do appreciate it.

Cinema is more accessible. You can pause. Go to the washroom. Curse. Breathe. Hate it without feeling guilty. Hate it without the actors knowing you hated it. You can do it on your own time. It is something you can share with millions of people across the world.

These are all things that theatre can not boast. Theatre is, after all, seen as an elitist form of art.

Its not that people are afraid to be challenged by theatre. Its that they can't be bothered to gamble on whether or not it will be a worthwhile experience.

More often than not, the product is not what it should be. This discourages people. I do not blame them.

Are they? I think people are itching to think differently. To be part of a revolution.

They just don't know where to look. Partially because there are so many mini-revolutions going on everywhere around them. How does one choose where to belong to? They can't. So they choose a family. Again, I don't blame them.

They do not have a chance to really discover contemporary artists. Too many other things going on around them. Too many artists satisfying themselves on preaching to the choir.

Personally, a lot of Canadian (Contemporary) theatre has helped me deal with a lot of personal, spiritual, and societal issues. It saddens me that I have been granted such change because of the milieu I'm in. I want to make this sort of theatre more accessible to audiences - I want to grant them the same opportunity I was bestowed.

Poverty. Financial stability. Is secondary. Maybe I'm a communist, but I try to work towards the greater good.

What is it...If you can't give a man something to hope for, give him something to believe in, and if you can't give him that, give him something to do?

I indebt myself because producing theatre allows me to experience three vital elements of my own existence.

Marketing. You have to develop your audience. It takes time. There are also factors outside our control.

This is our first two week run. If it had been a week, we would have sold out all of our shows. But alas, it spread itself out.

I'm actually encouraged (spiritually) by the houses so far. They have been generally appreciative, and most importantly, not our own. The people who have been coming are people who have heard of the show through the grapevine. That's really exciting!

It also makes me believe that next week will be most of the people we know + new strangers.

The trick is - how do you make them come see more? Well, by presenting something of quality. Something I feel we have done.

I do not know. I personally find you're very dedicated to your music. However, both fields are incredibly different when it comes to producing/showcasing/whatever.

Theatre only exists in a moment. Raising the stakes. And often times, the fall.

With music - you have it, you got it. Now it’s just a question of getting it heard by a lot of people... a challenge of its own proportions that I deeply admire.
